Despite being in one of the worst seats in the fashion house—the awkward corner where models turn and face their backs to you—this was one of my favourite shows.

Canadian golden boy Jeremy Laing is always a runway crowdpleaser and fashion’s most notable came to view the designer’s Spring 2013 collection: dark and moody palette of black, grey, cream, white and dusty rose. Laing’s presentation—which capped an exciting two-day fashion presentation at The ShOws held at Andrew Richard Design in Toronto—was a gorgeous, layered, utilitarian mash-up of jumpers, shortalls, maxi dresses. All of these practical silhouettes were crafted in light, flowy, shimmery-sheer fabrics like chiffon and silk with hits of embellishment on shoulder plates, bibs and with beaded tribal patterns on dresses.
Not only do we love Jean-Pierre Braganza’s name (“Brrrraganzaaaaa!”) we love the looks we saw during The Shows, a pre-Toronto Fashion Week runway presentation held at Andrew Richards Design’s venue space in Toronto. His pop-art inspired Spring 2013 collection featured strong-shouldered blazers with hits of teal, black, and cream with bold graphic prints.
After spending two years as a designer for Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s Elizabeth and James brand, Canadian-born Tanya Taylorbrings us easy, breezy 1960s-inspired A-line maxi dresses, and circle skirts with headscarves—the kind Rosie the Riveter would wear to Sunday brunch with the girls. She opened has the first of two during The Shows, a pre-Toronto Fashion Week runway presentation held at Andrew Richard Design’s venue space in Toronto.
Downtowners in Toronto are wildly excited about the new J.Crew womenswear and menswear stores in the Eaton Centre which opened last week (yes, gentlemen you read that right—J.Crew menswear is finally here in Canada at a brick and mortar store!)
Editors were invited to a special 8:30 a.m. breakfast before the shopping centre opened to get their fill of the new merch and snack on breakfast delights. And we all received a lovely little gift at the end, a cobalt-blue stone and gilt bracelet and J.Crew’s Fall 2012 catalogue: an editorial-looking delight! One of my favourite runway models of all time, Tao Okamoto, and a beauty that has been streetstyled religiously over the past couple of runway seasons: Caroline Issa, Tank magazine’s founder and editor-in-chief.
Take a peek at the catalogue below, filled with cashmere, cute separates and all of the chic we’ve come to expect and love from J.Crew.
Sneakers have always been fashionable (read: the ’80s and let’s not forget the ’90s) but since fashion houses started making their own versions of haute high and low tops, designer sneaker collaborations are now completely chic: Yves Saint Laurent, Chanel, Adidas by collections with Stella McCartney, Jeremy Scott, the luxe list goes on.
After Hussein Chalayan and Mihara, Puma adds a brand name to its list of designer collabs: Alexander McQueen.
Take a look at this awesome pink pair I was gifted by the brand last week at a recent brand look-see party in Toronto.
Choosing the wrong handbag can make or break your fashion week experience. Trust me! Carry a dressy clutch and you’ll be cocktail ready after evening shows, but you won’t have room for fashion week essentials: a camera, a mini notebookand pen, press kits, little gifts from the designers. Here are a few snaps of lovely lovelies showing off gorgeous purses outside of Chanel’s Fall-Winter 2012 show at the Grand Palais. See more pictures on TheKit.ca
America in the ’50s: pistachio green and fire engine red Cadillacs, headscarves, cat eye sunglasses, pencil skirts and pearls, an old gas pump station. Sublime! Prada’s Spring 2012 campaign is an old school-meets new school pop culture lesson in style. Dreamed up by resident photographer Steven Meisel, he delivers yet another captivating campaign for Prada, vintage set sexily against modern music, and expression. Bombshells brunette and blonde, we get a sizzling look at the jewel tone and pastel pieces from the brand, classic shapes with a very now kind of feeling.
The City of Lights and its top jewelery designers are bringing out the bling for haute couture fashion week in Paris, addinghaute joaillerie to the its mode schedule. The first-ever luxury accessory showing kicks off in time with the rest of PFW’s seasonal runway shows on January 24, 2010.
We can look forward to private presentations and haute joaillerie from Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Christian Dior, Chaumet, Chanel, Boucheron and Mellerio dits Meller. The houses are penciling in bespoke tête-à-têtes for January 28, 2010, by appointment only.
Who really wants to wait (what seems like forever) for Fall 2010′s grand debut? I can’t imagine who.
We’ve simply been twiddling our thumbs until the next round of international collections and thankfully pre-Fall 2010 is our sartorial saving grace. As soon as S/S 2010 shows come to a close, and the boozy after-party haze subsides, we start to get the fashion week shakes again: we miss all of the minimalism, asymmetrical abundance, frills, and overall decadence.
The industry’s most beloved designers–Burberry Prorsum, Alexander Wang, Missoni, and Mrs. Obama’s personal progeny Jason Wu among them–know all too well that we can’t fight our natural instincts.
Between our fashion fixes, we pine after our main muses Natasha Poly, Lily Donaldson, Anja Rubik and Sasha Pivovarova, we picture them colting down the catwalks. Then, we look to the ad campaigns du jour, cooing over fragrance faces like Jessica Stam for Nina Ricci’s Ricci Ricci; getting school-girl-giggly while watching Charlize Theron‘s sexpot strut for Dior’s J’adore and simply delirious over Italian stunner Mariacarla Boscono and Russian beauty Natalia Vodianova in Givenchy’s S/S 2010 fabulous new adverts.
Still, it’s just not the same. There’s simply no substitute for the runway show (*sigh). Until the New Year!
