Fashion Olympics: McQueen scarves, mitt mania

February 23, 2010 - 4:05 am
Fashion has been at the forefront during the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics. Go figure! From Hudson Bay Company mittens on The Oprah Show, to fashion maven Jeanne Beker descending on VanCity to survey the stylish set (see my article here), absolutely everyone seems to have had a hand in helping outfit the athletes and their entourages for the Winter games.

Dean and Dan Caten of DSquared also designed costumes for the closing ceremony performers. And even the late Alexander McQueen was commissioned by Holt Renfrew to design 250 signature red-and-white scarves for the Olympics with maple leaves superimposed on his trademark human skull pattern. While, the Gucci Group will continue the McQueen line posthumously (much of McQueen’s Fall-Winter 2010 collection was completed before his death) the scarf is officially the most recent design released to the fashion public.

Red mittens, along with the Alexander McQueen scarves, are at a premium now (completely sold out). In fact, fans are searching for another way to get their hands on them. On eBay, the scarves are going for about $500 USD and on Kijiji,  an online post has the scarf selling at a hefty $1,500 CAD.

This exhibit was one of the most inpsriing, and beautiful collections of an artist that purely channeled his love of beauty unsurpassed by limits. His consistency remained in that he was not afraid and quite fearless by definitions and rules set by society.Alexander McQueen’s passion for expression was contagious, and being able to interact with his art in person was humbling, and it left me in great gratitude for the gift he gave the world.
