OLD SOUL: NEW FINDS
September 20, 2009 - 5:37 pm
Last Saturday, amidst much TIFF feting and film screening, Toronto’s frugals were hard at work selling prime sartorial gems at Old Soul, a “down and dirty” vintage sale held at the decidedly low-key drinkery Canadian Corps Headquarters (201 Niagara Street, just south of King Street West).
The sale was presented by none other than the rare-find regent herself, Kealan Sullivan of 69 Vintage and clearance-priced boutique Buy the Pound. Thanks to her crew of lovely table keepers, the weekend offered a bevy of cool finds from local clothing, millinery and accessory designers.
It also helped gather a coterie of style mongers and helped remind us yet again that one person’s tchotchke is another’s precious treasure.
Dirty Diana
There’s nothing better than a buttery soft vintage cotton T-shirt. Add a pop of colour, nostalgic graphics, and one well-known diva. Say hello to your newest closet staple!
Born Again
Vivien Cheng‘s Revival collection takes weathered leather totes and transforms them into art-deco accessories. Her hand-painted gilt purses have already received nods from Vogue España and a personal curtsy from FashionTKTK.
Topper Talk
Lori-Anne Krausewitz‘s beautiful hand-crafted headwear line La Krause offers the young yet sophisticated a sure-fire cache of dainty yet modern caps, bonnets and feather chapeaus.
Jewel Envy
Covet Originals is a bauble purveyor that uses reconstructed 1950s clasps and even chandelier crystals to create one-of-a-kind pieces. Designer Andrea Brant can help bedazzle and bejewel the most finicky of frugals.
Uno, Dos … Seis!
Alejandra Porta and Pamela Martinez are the beauty and brains behind style intuitive line Numero Seis (No.6). Stocked with plumed earrings, golden-dipped animals on chain and sweet studs, they’re already a FashionTKTK favourite: see article here.
Back to Black
Silk, jersey-knit or velvet: an LBD is a girl’s best friend. Peep-toe stilettos with fringe have been my go-to statement pair this season. Here is yours truly, Glynnis Mapp of FashionTKTK among the stylish set.
Acid Rock
Cold weather be damned! Arty appliqués and acid-washed denim are all the rage for pre-Fall dressing. Rock on.
A Rose for a Rose
Admire this lovely style monger’s lace leggings and flower-print jacket, thanks to Buy the Pound’s selection of cheap chic duds.
Walk the Line
Nothing says “please Summer, stay” than a multi-coloured striped tank.
I’ve Been Framed
Black-and-white marbleized wayfarers from Spectacle make this jeans and T-shirt combo an edgy out-for-the-day ensemble.
Cut It Out
Denim cutoffs were a huge hit this été: the more frayed and threadbare the better. Caramel-coloured ankle gladiator sandals and a waist-length blazer help to give this summer uniform a preppy pick-me-up.
Beautiful Brights
The 69 Vintage table lovelies used colour to send Fall weather packing. Summer dresses, full skirts in jewel-tone hues like cerulean and electric fuschia are accented with crisp whites–a technicolour feast for the eyes. So fabulously bright, we needed shades!
The Dark Side
Mix bold patterns and plaids with dark cotton twills for a draped textile experience:
rich blacks, browns and navy blues. They never fail!
